  • Financial benefits are provided to ensure the livelihood of Persons with Distinguished Service to the State or their bereaved families and dependants. The benefit consists of veteran pension and allowances, and the amount corresponds to the level of sacrifice and contribution.

    Independence Movement Activist, service members and police officers killed or disabled on duty or in war, Korean War volunteer student-soldiers from Japan, participants of the April 19th Revolution, and disabled special contributors to national and social development.
  • Bereaved families
    Widows/widowers and children of Independence Movement Activists, service members and police officers deceased or disabled in action or on duty, Korean War volunteer student-soldiers from Japan, participants of the April 19th Revolution, and disabled special contributors to national and social development.

  • This is a basic benefit paid out each month to support the livelihood of Persons of Distinguished Service and their surviving families. Benefits are defined on a graded scale depending on the level of sacrifice and contribution.
  •  In 2009, the monthly pension benefit was KRW 390,000~3,860,000 for patriots, KRW 290,000~1,980,000 for disabled service members and police officers, and KRW 310,000~1,050,000 for bereaved families.

  • Allowances are paid according to the individual's level of sacrifice, contribution, the severity of the disability, age, length of service, and income.
    • Nursing Allowance is given to those who are disabled and cannot conduct daily activities without assistance (disability groups 1, 2). The payment is made to cover nurses' wages and is KRW 600,000~1,920,000 per month (2009).
    • The Income Supplement Allowance is given to ease the financial difficulties of low-income households and is KRW 90,000 to 100,000 per month (2009).
    • Allowance for Soldiers and police officers Killed in Action during the Korean War is given to the children of the deceased veteran and is KRW 600,000~690,000 per month (2009)
    • Allowance for Agent Orange Victims is paid to those who are suffering from the aftereffects of exposure to the Agent Orange herbicide during the Vietnam War, or by being in combat or on duty near the southern limit line of the line of Demilitarized Zone in Korea peninsula and is KRW 700,000~1,130,000 per month. (2009)
    • The Military Merit Allowance is paid to recipients of the Order of Military Merit aged 60 or over. The allowance is KRW 140,000 per month. (2009)
    • The Veterans Honorary Allowance is paid to meritorious war veterans aged 65 or over and is KRW 80,000 per month. (2009)
    • Death Compensation Benefit is a lump sum paid upon the death of a Independence Movement Activist, disabled service member or survivor. The amount is KRW 930,000~3,070,000.
