Korean War Veterans and their families from the Netherlands were invited to Korea from 9 to14 May 2016 as part of the veterans revisit Korea program held by Korea’s Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA).
They were honored by MPVA Minister Park Sungchoon for their noble sacrifices and their priceless contributions which freed the Republic of Korea and made possible its remarkable development as an influential democratic nation and world industrial power.
The veterans and their family members participated in commemoration ceremonies for the 65th anniversary of the Hoengseong Battle, which was fought in 1951 by the Netherlands Battalion. They also visited the graves of the veterans’ comrades at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan.
During their visit to the UN Cemetery on May 12, they held a burial service for Soldier First Class Nicolaas Frans Wessels, whose ashes were brought to Korea by his son to be buried in Korean soil, as part of the late soldier’s last will.
