The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Minister Park Sung Choon) held a memorial ceremony in honor of Marines and civilians who died during the North Korean artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island on November 23 at National Cemetery in Daejeon. The memorial commemorating the 1st anniversary of the shelling was attended by about 3,000 people including bereaved families of the fallen, government dignitaries, citizens etc.

In Yeonpyeong Island, various commemorative events including photo exhibition and unveiling ceremony of a bust sculpture of the fallen soldier were held with the aim of inspiring patriotism in the general public.

On November 23, 2010, North Korea fired more than 170 artillery rounds at the island, destroying numerous civilian homes and shops.

During the attack, Marines Staff Sgt. Suh Jung-woo and Lance Cpl. Moon Kwang-uk lost their lives in the defense of freedom of the Republic of Korea.

The Korean government plans to continue to hold this service in the future in order to pay respects to the fallen heroes and establish an awareness of national security.
