A ceremony to mark the 28th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement was held solemnly at the May 18 National Cemetery in Gwangju, South Jeolla province, at 10 a.m. of May 18 under the auspices of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

Some 2,500 people were present at the ceremony to pay tribute to the noble sacrifice for the cause of democracy and inherit and spread the May 18 spirit of democracy, justice and human rights. Among those attending were leaders of the government, the National Assembly and the judiciary, activists who participated in the movement, bereaved families, members of the movement, representatives of civic groups and students.

The democratization movement was originated from a civil uprising against a military government in Gwangju May 1980. Civilians`s demonstrations calling for the abolition of martial law and step-down of the military junta culminated on May 18, bringing about bloodshed.

Various commemorative services activities will be held to mark the anniversary including an international seminar and a handwriting tournament.
