Awarding a scholarship to a descendent of a UN Korean War veteran. The year 2010 marked the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. To commemorate this anniversary, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA) launched a scholarship program for youths in low-income nations among UN allied nations that participated in the Korean War. The scholarship was established to express appreciation for the sacrifice and dedication of those countries’ veterans who safeguarded the peace and freedom of the Republic of Korea during the Korean War at great peril to themselves. Scholarship funds are raised through donations by Korean government officials of KRW 1,000 (USD 0.90) or less, deducted from their monthly wages.

  • Direct descendants of UN Korean War veterans from Ethiopia, the Philippines, Thailand and Colombia.
  • Students attending public school. However, students attending private schools are also eligible to receive scholarships if they are from low-income households which meet the criteria set by the MPVA.
  • Students who have been offered scholarships from other organizations are not eligible.
