The MPVA has awarded 165 of patriots and martyrs who led independence movements against the Japanese colonial rule on March 1st, 1919 on the 86th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement day.

The types of decoration awarded include Order of Merit for National Foundation, National Foundation Medal, and President`s Commendation. 106 out of 165 recipients are selected by the government based on judgement statements kept in National Archives & Records Service, lists of prisoners under sentence kept in town offices, and newspaper data. Only one recipient is currently alive, and two of them are women.

The yearly award for Persons of Distinguished Services to National Independence is expanded to 3 times a year in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of National Liberation; on the March 1st Independence Day, the November 17th Patriotic Martyr`s Day, and the August 15th National Liberation Day.

The decoration was awarded at the March 1st commemoration ceremony held in local governments and embassies & legations abroad, and the decoration for those who do not have any descendent will be kept by the government.

The judgement on merits of the independence activists and patriotic martyrs was committed to experts from November last year in an aim of maintaining objectivity, and the criteria for the merits have been re-established through collecting opinions of outside experts and the judging commission for merit reward.

The MPVA has sped up effort in collecting and analyzing historical materials on independence movement by forming a historical material research team composed of 15 experts in January.

In particular, the research team drew up a report on about 300 cases of individual merits of independence activists during January which constituted a basis of the award for Persons of Distinguished Services to National Independence on March 1.

The MPVA will continue such effort to collect and analyze historical materials in close cooperation with related organizations such as the Institute of Korean Independence Movement Studies, the National History Compilation Committee, and National Archives & Records Service.
