Dong-ju Yoon(1917-1945)
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA) announced patriotic poet Dong-ju Yoon as the Independence Activist for this December 2007 in honor and recognition of his distinguished achievement for Korean Independence as well as to celebrate the 90th anniversary of his birth.

Dong-ju Yoon (1917-1945) was born in China on Dec. 27, 1917 and raised in Seoul. He enrolled at the Kwangmyung Middle School after graduation from the Myungdong Elementary School. In 1941, one year before graduating from the Yonhi College, he made a collection of poems, titled, "Sky and winds and stars and poems`` including the renowned poem "Seo-shi." His aspiration for Korean Independence is reflected in every page of his poetry. Yoon went to Japan to study English literature at the Tokyo University in 1942.

In 1943 he was labeled a dangerous character and was constantly under surveillance by Japanese police. The accusations made against him were caused by his educational background and enrollment in the military academy in China. The same year he was arrested of instigating Korean students towards independence against the Japanese Colonialism and sentenced to two years. Those two years were served in the Hukuoka prison where he was pronounced dead on Feb.16, 1945 with the unclear cause of his death. Tragically his life was ended at the tender age of 28.

Dong-Ju Yoon was awarded the Independence Medal of Honor for the National Foundation in 1990, in commemoration and memorial of his great love and wish for Korean Independence.
